Emergency Preparedness for Vacation Rental Guests:

As a visitor to Hornby Island, you may not know where to go, who to contact, or what to do if there is an emergency during your visit. This guide will support you to get prepared before an emergency arises:

  1. Pack an emergency kit and “go bag” (see this Government of BC guide for tips). It should include items for your unique specific needs (e.g. personal medications, pet food, epi-pen) in case an emergency requires you to leave on short notice. Remember: there is no pharmacy on Hornby!
  2. Local information will be broadcast on local Hornby radio CFHR 96.5 FM and/or CBC 690 AM or 92.5 FM
  3. Sign up for emergency notifications from the Comox Valley Regional District (e.g. fire, earthquake)
  4. Call 911 emergencies ONLY. Non-life threatening medical issues should seek help in the medical facilities in Comox.

Consider bringing:

  1. A well-stocked first aid kit
  2. Water filtration tools (like LifeStraw’s, water purification tablets or other portable filters)
  3. Fire extinguisher alongside each propane appliance you bring (such as BBQ’s and heaters)
  4. Your list of who to call in the event of an emergency (e.g. your doctor). Ensure the following emergency and local service information, as well as your contact information is readily visible.

This list of important contact information:

  • Ambulance, Fire, RCMP Emergency Only – Dial 911
